Central Region Pickup Truck (PUT) Initiative

The Central Region Pickup Truck Initiative began in January 2006 to increase safety belt use among pickup truck occupants across the four States in the region:  Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. This two year project is a partnership with the Central Region States and their partners along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Central Region and Headquarters offices.

The initiative’s strategy is based upon and compliments the national “Click it or Ticket” (CIOT) program and consists of the following four components: 1) Paid media, 2) Law enforcement, 3) Earned Media, 4) Outreach and 5) Evaluation.

Pickup truck occupants are one of the lowest belt use rate categories nationally and in the region.  This group consists mainly of young men, 18 – 34 years of age.

Central States Crashes & FatalsTo illustrate the depth of the current problem, the map at right identifies the number of unrestrained pickup truck occupant fatalities in the region from 2000 to 2004 (five years). There are many more serious injuries resulting from unrestrained occupants. Click on an individual State to view additional crash data and the percentage of unrestrained occupant fatalities.
